Description: |
Sketch, by James F. Bippus, of the first courthouse in Huntington, Indiana in the 1840s. John Tipton although not a resident of Huntington, has had an important influence upon its early history. Tipton, a resident of Logansport, and a former Indiana agent and United States Senator, obtained title to part of the land entered by the Helvey brother in 1831, and laid out and plotted the Original Plot of the town of Huntington. He then proposed to the commissioners appointed to select a county seat being located in the new town which he had just laid out and plotted, that he would transfer to the county a number of lots and also erect a building for a courthouse. His offer was accepted, and in this way Huntington became the county seat. It was build in 1840 on the northwest corner of Jefferson and Franklin streets. It was used as a courthouse until the building was sold by Tipton interests in 1856 to George J. Bippus and was used for sometime afterwards as a restaurant. Huntington, Indiana. |
