Description: |
Early aviator C.P. Rodgers leaving Huntington in his plane after a pitstop in the town during his cross-country trip from New York to California following the Erie Railroad. Taking off from Sheepshead Bay, NY on September 17, 1911, Cal Rodgers began his transcontinental flight despite only just receiving his aviation license on August 7, 1911. Cal Rodgers was only the 49th person in the world to receive an aviation license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale and was trained by Orville Wright himself. He flew a Wright Model EX that he named the Vin Fiz after a grape soft drink produced by his sponsor, a Chicago company called Armour and Company. Cal Rodgers completed his transcontinental flight on November 5, 1911 when he landed in Pasadena, CA. Along his journey, Cal Rodgers made 70 stops and crashed 16 times. One of his many stops was on October 1, 1911 when he landed on Pat Gormans field in Huntington where thousands of Huntingtonians were waiting for him. |
