Das Deutsche Haus building

Description: Das Deutsche Haus, located at the corner of Michigan and New Jersey Street and Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana, was constructed in two phases from 1893 to 1898 and was home to the German Turnverein Society, a gymnastic association. In response to anti-German sentiment during World War I, Das Deutsche Haus changed its name to Athenaeum in 1918. As of 2017, the Athenaeum remains open in its original location and hosts several organizations including a YMCA and the Rathskeller, the oldest continually operating restaurant in the city.
