Description: |
The old Post Office and Courthouse, completed in 1860 and later expanded in 1873, was located at 45 North Pennsylvania Street in Indianapolis, Indiana. Designed by A.B. Young, A.B. Mullett, and Francis Costigan, each room had a fireplace, as evidenced by the buildings numerous chimneys. The Post Office occupied the basement and first floor, while the Courtroom and offices of various government officials were located on the second and third floors. In 1905, the Post Office and Courthouse moved into a new building, known as the Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse today, at 46 East Ohio Street. The old building was occupied by American Fletcher National Bank until 1961. In 1962, the building was demolished in order to construct the Union Federal Building. |
