Chair with wicker seat

Description: Photograph of wooden chair with wicker seat made by inmates at the Indiana Reformatory in Clarksville. The chair was originally located in the old Clark County Courthouse in Jeffersonville, but is now privately owned. In 1897 the state established a system of trade schools at the reformatory to provide inmates with vocational training. One of these was furniture making and cabinetry. Furniture made by inmates was used in the prison and sold to the public through catalogs.
