Description: |
St. Lukes Church stands at 329 Walnut Street in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana. When St. Luke’s was created as the German Protestant Church in Jeffersonville in 1860, the women of the congregation pledged to raise at least half of the salary of the pastor. As the church grew, their fundraising turned to other items needed for the church. When a new building was completed at the corners of Maple and Walnut Street in 1914, they had completed at least 14 years of fundraising for the building. The mortgage was not yet paid off and in 1916, they continued their effort through a series of monthly dinners at 5 and 10 cents a plate and other socials. By the end of the year they had written checks to the church treasurer that totaled $1,543.00. |
