Description: |
Aerial photograph of part of Clarksville looking towards the north. Shown are the buildings of the American Car & Foundry Co. and the Colgate plant. Visible is Missouri Avenue (right), Main Street (left), which intersects with South Clark Boulevard in front of the Colgate plant. The Colgate plant was formerly the Indiana Reformatory. A fire in 1918 destroyed many of the reformatory buildings. Rather than rebuild, the state decided to move the inmates to a new facility in Pendleton and sell the site. Colgate puchased the buildings and property in 1923. The plant closed in 2007 and is today privately owned. Beginning operations in 1864 as the Ohio Falls Car and Locomotive Company, the American Car & Foundry Co. manufactured rail coach, parlor, baggage, mail, and private cars. During World War I the company manufactured military items such helmets, wagons, tables, and cots. The works closed in 1933, a victim of the depression and the country’s growing reliance on automobiles. |
