Description: |
Aerial photograph of the Colgate-Palmolive plant and the American Car and Foundry Co. in Clarksville. The Colgate plant is at the top with the American Car & Foundry Co. complex of buildings running from the bottom left to the center. Visible in the lower right corner is the Indiana approach to the Clark Memorial Bridge spanning the Ohio River to downtown Louisville. The Colgate plant was formerly the Indiana Reformatory. A fire in 1918 destroyed many of the reformatory buildings. Rather than rebuild, the state decided to move the inmates to a new facility in Pendleton and sell the site. Colgate puchased the buildings and property in 1923. The plant closed in 2007 and today is privately owned. Many prison buildings are still visible in the photograph, including cell blocks and the two-story superindents residence (to the right). The Colgate Clock, with a 40-foot diameter, is one of the largest in the world. Beginning in 1864 as the Ohio Falls Car and Locomotive Company, the American Car and Foundry Co. manufactured rail coach, parlor, baggage, mail, and private cars. During World War I the company produced military items such helmets, wagons, tables, and cots. The works closed in 1933, a victim of the depression and the country’s growing reliance on automobiles. |
