Map of the town of Howard Park, county of Clark, Indiana, 1886

Description: Printed plat map of the town of Howard Park, surveyed and marked by Victor W. Lyon, May and June, 1886. Street names and lot numbers are given. Also shown is Mill Run and Cane Run creeks, Mill Strip parcel, the county road running from New Albany to Jeffersonville, and several Patterson Estate lots. The map includes a note by Stotsenburg & Son advertising the virtues of the new town. Jottings on the map list prices of the sale of some of the lots. With the resolution of Clarksville’s legal status and town boundaries, the last decades of the 19th century saw an explosion in the town’s growth. The main center of activity was Howard Park, a huge development along todays Clark Blvd. north of Montgomery Ave. and bisected by Harrison Ave.. John A. and John H. Stotsenberg were instrumental in leading Howard Park’s growth. The area remained a center of development well into the 20th century. Howard Park would later be incorporated into the Town of Clarksville, but the area is still known as the Howard Park neighborhood.
