Description: |
Photograph of the Indiana Reformatory and American Car & Foundry Co. taken from the companys water tower. Several of the American Car Companys buildings can be seen in the bottom half of the photo. The white front entrance to the reformatory has cell blocks to the right and left. The row of houses running perpeticular to the prison are on Woerner Ave. The American Car and Foundry Co. manufactured rail coach, parlor, baggage, mail, and private cars. The works closed in 1933, a victim of the depression and the country’s growing reliance on automobiles. The reformatory was completed in 1847. In 1918 a fire swept through the prison, destroying many buildings. Rather than rebuild, the state sold the buildings and property to the Colgate Company in 1921 for a soap making factory. |
