Letter, James Dill (Lawrenceburg) to Governor Thomas Posey, 15 June 1813

Request from James Dill to the governor to settle a long standing dispute about the selection of officers, June 15, 1813.

Description: A letter to Governor Posey addressing the need to formalize some method of appointing qualified men to the rank of Colonel Commandant in the Indiana Territory militia. Dill outlines a short history of how fulfillment currently works for the post. He explains that popular elections could give men without military experience greater rank over those who are experienced. Dill recommends a merit-based review when an individuals ability to lead could be better examined prior to the expected 1813 fall campaign against the Indians.
