Korean War Letter from Melvin R. Tobin to Jesse G. Dorsey 15 Jun 1951

Description: Melvin is at Camp Drake in Tokyo, Japan. He spent time in Fort Lawton, Seattle and Tucoma, Washington during his 14 days of leave time. They then moved to Pier 91. They set sail from Pier 39 on the USS Marine Lynx on May 31 and landed in Yokohama Japan on June 14. The Fort Lawton Army Band played at their departure and the Red Cross served coffee and donuts. They were late because of a distress signal from the SS Purple Star that sent them off course. He included a ship newsletter that tells about the incident. They took a train to Camp Drake. He has a carbine M-1 gun but things he will get rid of it. This letter is part of the Jesse G. Dorsey Korean War Correspondence collection. Dorsey was the Director of Recreation and Welfare and editor of the Speed-O-Meter newsletter for the Louisville Cement Company. Dorsey began sending monthly letters and the Speed-O-Meter to local service personnel during WWII. He continued this through the Korean War and for sometime afterwards.
