[July 1973 Vol II No 6 page 8]PAGE 8 THE HOOSIER NEWS JULY, 1973THE HOOSIER 1O YEAR HONOR ROLLThe following employees of ICI America Inc. completed 10 years service during the month of June.E0201 HARTLEY, G. A. E0162 HORN, C. A.Utilities Conservation At Indiana Army Ammunition PlantDo you know that there is in operation a Utilities Conservation Program at Indiana Army Ammunition Plant? There certainly is. The program, operated by a committee of representatives from each division, is very active and has thus far been effective in reducing the utilities which are consumed in plant operations. The committee is guided by Plant SOP No. 7-13 dated April 19, 1973.The stated purpose of the Utilities Conservation Program is to promote, direct, supervise and initiate ways and means to prevent waste of utilities and materials in attaining their optimum economy, safety and product quality in all phases of operation. The committee has a basis of objectives and utility conservation measures which are being made active and effective. The essential requirements of heating, electricity and water are provided without waste. All personnel are being made aware of the necessity of limiting usage to actual requirements. The committee composed of Chairman Vance Smelser, one representative from each division and a representative of the COR Staff are meeting monthly. The committee is responsible to make periodic reports. In addition to the above responsbilities, the committee members must always be cognizant of and assure compliance with all Indiana Army Ammunition Plant Safety Regulations. Some recent accomplishments of the committee have been to initiate arrangements for adding an additonal 867,000 gallons of fuel oil storage facilities. Another has been the conservation of electrical power used for lighting of operating facilities and office buildings. A project was approved recently for the installation of a small electrically operated steam generator to be used with the dehumidificaton equipment at Building 2591 which will permit the shutting down of a large oil fired boiler at nights and weekends with a resulting savings of approximately $200 per week during the summer months.During the coming months, every employee at Indiana, Contractor and Government alike, will be subject to communications by all means necessary from the Utilities Conservation Committee and will be encouraged to cooperate and participate in achieving over-all plant objectives as stated above. Your cooperation is solicited, is necessary and is appreciated.ICI America Inc.Indiana Army Ammunition Plant Charlestown, Indiana 47111Bulk Rate U. S. BrownVacation Tips RevisedWell, well all be leaving on our summer trips just a few days after you read this. Because of recent developments, we thought it prudent to revise and add a couple of important items to our earlier tips on vacation activities.Again, listen up, its important that we recognize the fact that the experts, nationwide are predicting a boom year in tourist travel and crowded highways. And that we should expect first timers on the roads pulling trailers and driving huge self-contained rigs. One reporter in Colorado saw a triple rig. It was a pick-up with camper top, pulling a travel trailer, and the travel trailer pulling a twenty foot motor boat. Wow! What a monthly payment schedule that pilgrim must have! Lets hope he practiced some before setting out to cross the Rockies and the desert with it.The last few weeks were hearing about a gasoline shortage. Its my honest opinion that most of us dont give a hoot about gasoline mileage anymore (the monstrosities we buy to feed petrol through) but now perhaps we must. Whether the shortage is real or imagined, we do have reports of many service stations closing on Sundays and charging more for gasoline. When you figure your fuel budget, you should use 50 cents per gallon for a starter. Anl fill up when about half empty on long runs instead of letting it down to about one-quarter. Some stations on the turnpikes will limit you to ten gallons per stop so you will have more stops this year. Gasoline to California and back for instance will run about $80 to $100!Here are a few common sense tips on how to cut down on gas waste:Use accelerator wisely, keep a steady pace.Anticipate stops and slow down before you reach intersections. Panic stops cost extra gas.Anticipate hills, speed up a little prior to climbing a grade and let off a little before a long downhill stretch. Keep tires at recommended pressure. Underinflation causes the engine to work harder, increases tire wear and increases tire temperature.Drive at reasonable speed. On turnpike cruising we incline to get velo-citized and creep up around the 80 MPH range. Keep it around the 60 MPH range for greatest fuel economy and safety.Package deal trips should be well documented and well understood. While the vast majority of these offerings are straight, honest, and a very good buy, there are some problems likely again this year. You may remember that last vacation season there were numbers of Americans left stranded in other countries by all-expense trip deals which went sour, and friend, that is a bad scene. Learn enough about your particular arrangement to be sure you know what you get on the deal and what you dont get. Call the carrier if warranted to get a firm verification that return passage is paid for. Or have a rich Aunt Tillie who you may call collect from Hong Kong, Key West or Fairbanks. She may have to wire a few hundred to fly you and the kiddoes home in time for work July 30th!Campers! Wire or phone ahead for your reservations. If not, you may pull in at dark, all sticky, tired, and saddled with hungry kids, to hear the man say, Friend Hoosier, just keep driving another 280 miles and you will find a camp ground with a few spots open! It happens every year.On security of the home and possessions, youll be glad to hear this good news. Those of us who borrowed the electric etching device from the local gendarmes and initialed possessions in unseen spots, have helped deter house breaking and burglary. These types just will not steal homeowners possessions so marked because that one factor (identification) nulifies the biggest loophole which thieves use when caught. That is ; the laws inability, frequently, to tie the apprehended persons directly to specific property. But when marked with names, initials or Social Security number, you have him. And it has been quite a deterent. Additionally, coordinate your trip with your neighbors, so that any activity at your house or apartment brings cops, badges and guns out of the woodwork!WISH YOU WELLMany of our readers have called to say Bye and that they are heading for Nashau, or Hawaii, Florida, California and Maine. Largest preference this year apparently is Florida and Hawaii. Well take money, your thinking cap (to keep your wits and safety awareness about you), no booze (have a sip on the other end after the days drive), and your camera to send old Charlie a picture. My group is all spread to the four winds: Steve, now 20 and an Indiana University student, is gone to the big Navajo reservation in Arizona to teach crafts to Indian boys and girls. Chris (17) is gone to May field. Kentucky for the summer to dig Indian caves and mounds and explore Land-between-the-Lakes. Judy is going to Florida with a friend and her Dad. Mrs. and Terri are sunning at the pool, and Ill be bashing an old house back together which I got stuck with. See ya back on 30 July. Have a safe and sane vacation friends.I need to keep all the readers I have, so dont you flip your vehicle and loved ones over the side of Lookout Mountain!THE HOOSIER 5 YEAR HONOR ROLLThe following employees of ICI America Inc. completed 5 years service during the month of June.E1188 SMITH, S. B.I Am Deans CigaretteCrushed and defeated you see me now - lying in a bed of cold ashes. You pity me. Ha, poor thing. A looser, you say. But I have had my moment of glory, however brief, and I know that my triumph will live on, long after my dying embers have cooled. For you see, I am merely a link in the chain - the chain of smoking that is dragging him down. When my toxious perfumes are inhaled, his lungs are the scene of furious activity. Between the time that he first places me between his lips and the time that he cruelly grinds the life out of me, I must leave my mark - and I do. His lungs surely dont look or feel the same after I am finished working them over. My addictive nicotine impels him to light up another one of my comrades - each of which has the same satanic purpose in its short life - to destroy! And they do. Little by little - not enough to notice at first - until its too late. I may only be a tiny bit of tobacco, clothed in a white wrapper, but my power is matchless. Within seconds, he has granted life to another cigarette, and is busily at work sucking the life out of it. Pack after pack he devours, and as each one of us sighs our last smoky breath, we die laughing.SUCCESSAH, IT IS SO SWEET. WHAT A WAY TO GO ....Author known |
