20 photographs taken in 1942 and 1943 of the Pleasant Ridge government housing in Charlestown, Indiana. In February 1942, the United State government announced it would fund 750 prefabricated homes to be built by Gunnison Housing Corporation of New Albany, Indiana. The homes were to be built for defense workers of the Indiana Ordnance Works factory on Highway 62 near Charlestown. At peak production they would build 1 house each hour, 24 hours a day. Production of the 750 Victory Model homes began in June 1942 and was completed in March 1943. On July 29, 1943 a tornado destroyed or damaged 249 of the homes which was just 3 days after the government paid the bill for the houses. The housing development is located on Clark Road off Highway 3 in Charlestown, Indiana.Be sure to read the description for the photographs. Most of them have text written on back by Robert C. Baughman Jr. in 1993. He was the son of Robert C. Baughman Sr. who was the Gunnison project manager for the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood in Charlestown, Indiana. |
