Pleasant Ridge & Jennings Terrace notice of sale letter, Charlestown, Indiana 6 Jan 1955

Description: A letter from 1955 to the tenants of Pleasant Ridge and Jennings Terrace government housing subdivisions reminding them that the properties are being sold and how the tenants can apply to purchase the property. Pleasant Ridge subdivision was built by the U.S. federal government in 1941 to provide housing the employees of Indiana Ordnance Works (IOW) in Charlestown, Indiana. IOW was built in 1940 to provide smokeless gunpowder ordnance to the U.S. military during WWII. The plant continued production after the war. Jennings Terrace was a smaller subdivision built around 1943. The Pleasant Ridge homes were prefabricated Gunnison Homes. They were intended to be temporary housing and torn down after the war was over. As this letter indicates, the homes were continued to be used as government housing until 1955 when they were sold into public ownership. Starting in 2016 a developer began purchasing the homes in Pleasant Ridge to redevelop the area. Many of the houses have been torn down.
