On Friday, December 22, 1961, Ross Martin turned the first spadeful of earth at a ground-breaking ceremonies for the Elkhart Public Library currently located at 300 S. 2nd Street. The library project was funded by the Martin Foundation Groundbreaking for the new library. Assembled for the ceremony from left to right is Ralph Schafer, city clerk; Mr. Schreiner; Richard P. Miller, library architect; city councilmen Irvin Kell, James Bates, William A. Reed; Mayor-designate Richard Corns; Mrs. Howard Christner of the library board; outgoing Mayor Frank J. Parmater; Head Librarian Ruth E. Kellogg; Louis D. Stealy (behind Mrs. Kellogg); Esther Martin, foundation trustee and library board member; William H. Nicholson, Mrs. M.H. Russell and John Burt, all of the library board; John Harmon, former city attorney; Joe C. Rice, superintendent of schools. On the truck are Fred Wright (in cab), owner of Wright Construction, library contractor, and Lee Martin (standing), president of NIBCO and foundation trustee, and Lees two sons, Rex (left) and Casper (right). |
