C.G. Conn factory, ruins

Description: This photograph shows the ruins of the C.G. Conn Factory at 414-432 E. Jackson Street following a fire on May 22, 1910. Two watchmen discovered smoke in the building shortly after midnight. In seeking out the source, one of the watchmen, Royal Edgerly, fell and did not escape the blaze. The other watchman, William Mabus, was able to crawl through the smoke and flee the building. This was the second fire to strike the Conn plant at this location. The fire department battled the blaze for nearly five hours before putting it out. The extent of damage and severity of the fire prompted the city to purchase a steam-powered pumper for the fire department. The fire destroyed the building with losses estimated at $580,000. Close to 100 Elkhart men and women were left without work. The Conn company quickly set about rebuilding its third factory at 1101 E. Beardsley.
