Description: |
Pictured here are the police and fire stations of Elkhart. The two photos at the bottom show the Old Central Police/Fire station which was located at 133-135 E. Franklin St. As the city and its population grew, the need for a larger fire department became evident. The three stations shown were added in response to that need. From left to right at the top, are Station No. 2 (southeast corner of Main and Prairie) built in 1904, Station No. 3 (located where the Lincoln School building is on Oakland Ave.) built in 1905, and Station No. 4 (northeast corner of Plum and W. Beardsley) also built in 1905. |
