Description: |
William McKinley and Garrett Hobart soundly defeated William Jennings Bryan and Arthur Sewell in the 1896 Presidential election. After service in the civil war and attending law school, McKinley worked actively in politics. After representing Ohio in the House of Representatives, McKinley campaigned to keep the dollar tied to the gold standard rather than changing the standard as Bryan proposed. The bandana stresses prosperity and patriotism using “sound money” or gold standard. During office as the 25th President, the United States entered into a war with Spain over Cuba known as the Spanish-American War. Once defeated, the Spanish ceded Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines while Cuba became an independent state. McKinley ran again, and won, in 1900 with running mate Theodore Roosevelt. |
