Red paper lantern

Description: Lanterns are displayed during many different Chinese festivals. They come in many shapes, sizes, and materials and often depict characters of Chinese mythology or popular cartoons. Many are red, the color for happiness and good luck. The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the 15th of the first month of the New Year, marking the end of the two week long New Year celebration. On the night of the festival, elaborate and beautiful lantern displays are assembled in cities and villages for all to admire. Usually, a prize is awarded to the creator of the most beautiful lantern or lantern display. Festivities also include dragon and lion dances, playing games, setting off firecrackers and eating traditional foods such as Yuanxiao (sticky, sweet rice balls). Children participate in the festival by carrying their own lanterns. During the two week Chinese New Year celebration, colorful and decorative lanterns are displayed in homes, businesses and at parties. These lanterns were made about 1980.
