Description: |
Model boats like this royal ship were found in the tomb of Tutankhamen, pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt (ruled 1334 BC/1333 BC – 1323 BC) during the period known as the New Kingdom. Such boats were probably meant to assist the deceased in his voyage to the afterlife through the watery world of Osiris, the god of the underworld. Also, because the Nile River was the main route of transportation as well as a major source of food (fish and birds), boats were considered an important part of the equipment needed to continue one’s daily existence into the next life. Tutankhamen’s tomb was found almost entirely intact by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Egypt. This model was made by a skilled model ship builder in Argentina in the 1980s. |
