Josie Flying Her Gothic Birdcage sculpture

Description: During World War II, Joanne (Josie) Wallace of Springfield, Massachusetts, distinguished herself as a Ferry Command pilot with the Womens Air Force Service Pilots. Little did she know when she married Hoosier native Major Robert D. Orr in 1944 that she would one day serve as Republican First Lady of Indiana! (Governor Orr served 1981-89). Known for her outspoken support of the arts, Josie Orr commissioned Evansville sculptor John McNaughton to create the fanciful mixed media wire sculpture Josie Flying Her Gothic Birdcage in 1974 as a self-portrait of Mrs. Orr.
