Mummified falcon

Description: Ancient Egyptians mummified animals for a variety of reasons. Some animals, such as cows, were mummified and entombed with human mummies to provide food in the afterworld. Some pets, such as gazelles and dogs, were contained in tombs with their owners to provide companionship in the next life. Many animals, including falcons and cats, were associated with powerful gods and considered sacred. Once mummified, they were buried as offerings at temples and shrines dedicated to their associated deities. Falcons were believed to be an animal form taken by the sun-god Horus, referred to as the Falcon God.
