Malloum or Quran board

Description:	In the past, (mostly) boys learned to recite parts of the Quran, the Muslim Holy book, in Quranic schools. Muslims believe that God or Allah revealed this book to the prophet Mohammed. A Quran board like this one was used to teach young boys verses from the Quran. The boy would hold it in his lap and copy Arabic passages. If you look closely, you can see the remains of a past lesson. Quran schools still exist in places where Muslims live. It used to be, in Arabic countries, that only privileged boys were educated. Over the past 30 years education has reached a much broader group. Remarkable progress has been made to reach girls, as well as boys; rural, as well as urban children.
