Description: |
Cattle are very important within the Masai culture of East Africa. The source of Masai livelihood, cattle are carefully protected. Because cattle raids with neighboring groups were once common, warriors hold a special place in Masai society. Skilled hunters and fighters, the warriors decorate their bodies with red ochre paint, elaborate beaded jewelry and hairstyles, and impressive headwear, like this headdress decorated with ostrich feathers. Although the Kenyan government forbids cattle raids and lion hunts today, warriors are still a very important part of Masai culture and can still be seen wearing this type of headdress during ceremonial occasions. |
