Silver necklace with ghungru

Description: India has a very rich history in ornate clothing and jewelry. When dressed in formal attire for special occasions, women are often covered from head to toe in all types of jewelry, including headdresses, hair ornaments, earrings, pendants, belts, armlets, bracelets, hand and toe rings and anklets. Made of gold, silver and gemstones, jewelry varies in style from region to region. This silver necklace, made in the early 20th century, has a traditional feature called ghungru (small bells). Ghungru are often worn on anklets by classical dancers to create jingling sounds as they dance. The style of pendant on the necklace continues to be very popular in India. It is very versatile and can be worn on a necklace, as earrings, or as an ornament in the hair.
