Description: |
During the Mexican celebration of Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) children and adults play with and display small toys that look like well known-people or skeletons enjoying everyday activities. Artist Miguel Linares made this sculpture to honor Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo who, as spirits, return to visit friends and family during the celebration. Miguel has gone far beyond the inspiration of the seasonal little folk toys meant for play and gift-giving by creating a spectacular and permanent work of art. Miguel is one of three sons of Pedro Linares, the original creator of many of the Linares familys artistic traditions. Fantastical monsters (alebrijes), pinatas and other sculptures of papier mache are a trademark of the Linares family. The sons of Pedro Linares remember and follow in the footsteps of their father who taught them the folk art of papier mache. Together, family members developed this craft into a fine art which has received international recognition. |
