Description: |
Virgil Ivan Gus Grissom from Mitchell, Indiana was one of the original Mercury 7, the first astronauts chosen by NASA in 1959. He became the second American man in space in 1961 when he flew the Liberty Bell 7 Mercury capsule on its suborbital flight. He flew into space again with John Young on the first Gemini flight in 1965. He was to have commanded the first Apollo flight, but tragedy struck when he and fellow crewmen Ed White and Roger Chaffee died on the launch pad during a preflight test in 1967. This photograph of him was taken around 1959, and is signed Virgil I. Grissom, which is unusual because he much preferred the name Gus. |
