From 1975 until 1979 ABC ran a show called "Welcome Back Kotter" about a classroom of underachievers nicknamed “sweathogs.” "Welcome Back Kotter" was mostly a comedy, but it did sometimes tackle difficult topics too, as did other comedy shows in the 1970s.
