Thomas Marshall “Notification Day Reception” souvenir

Description: In 1912, Indiana Governor Thomas Riley Marshall accepted the Democratic nomination for Vice President. This ribbon is a souvenir from the reception that announced Marshall as Vice Presidential candidate. A lawyer and popular speaker, Marshall joined Woodrow Wilson on the ballot. During the 1912 election, the voters had four candidates to choose from. Woodrow Wilson represented the democrats. Eugene V. Debs stood for the Socialist Party of America. The Republican Party had divided between incumbent President William Taft and former President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt ultimately left with other progressive Republicans to form the Progressive Party. With significant division in the Republican Party, Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall won the 1912 election.
