Description: |
In the late 1800s, there were expectations about how to behave when someone died. If a close relative died, you might mourn this loss for several months to a year or more. A woman would wear black clothing like this bodice with black silk crepe trim. The crepe would be a sign to others that she was in the first months of mourning for her loved one. As time passed, she could remove the crepe and wear the bodice as regular clothing. |
