Description: |
William W. Wilbur used this coin to advertise his trade in Charleston, South Carolina in 1846. Born in Virginia, Wilbur lived in South Carolina with Mary, his wife, and his children. As an auctioneer he sold property from individuals and businesses. Before the Civil War, slaves were considered property as well. Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 and confirmation of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution formally ended slavery in the United States. |
