Description: |
These Crèche figures represent the Christian holy family trio, the wise men, attendants and common laborers. The figures were used in religious scenes especially around Christmas to illustrate the birth of Christ. The initials found on this carving are KMB or CMB, which are the names of the three Wise Men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. The Star Boys who are important figures during the holiday write the initials over the front doors of homes in Poland as well as Czechoslovakia and Sweden. Along with the initials, three crosses are drawn. According to tradition, the homes marked with these holy symbols will experience good fortune throughout the year. |
