Carousel

Description: Carousels have long been a favorite ride in amusement parks. This Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters carousel--with its Gustav Dentzel horses and menagerie animals—first thrilled Indianapolis children at White City Amusement Park in Broad Ripple in 1917. Each of the thirty-plus horses, goats, lions, tigers and reindeer had been hand-carved in Gustav Dentzels workshop in Germantown, Pennsylvania. After the pavilion housing the carousel collapsed in 1956, 41 of the 42 animals eventually found their way to The Childrens Museum. Another Mangels-Illions mechanism and a 1919 Wurlitzer carousel organ were also acquired and the carousel was reconstructed inside the museum. It opened to the public in 1976 and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1990.
