Description: |
According to family stories, Betsy Ross stated she made the first United States flag in 1776. Living in Philadelphia at the time, Ross did work as a seamstress. Attending the same church as George Washington, it is possible she discussed the subject with him. The Pennsylvania State Navy Board did commission her to make flags for the navy; there is no record of her working on the federal flag. Despite this, the name Betsy Ross remains in many people’s mind as one of the founding women of the United States. |
