Description: Mr. Curtis declines Sewalls invitation to speak to her society (Indianapolis Equal Suffrage Society?). He is too busy and also feels that her cause needs no help that cannot be found closer to home.George William Curtis was an American man of letters and editor of Harpers Weekly who strongly influenced public opinion through writing and lecturing. His causes included emancipation; civil rights and social equality for African-Americans, Native Americans, and women; civil service reform; public education; and environmental conservation. He was also a member of the Brook Farm Community as a young man.
