New Harmony Land Contract Letter

Description: This letter reflects Owens unshakable optimism for a utopian society. By 1827 Owen abandoned his cooperative community project in New Harmony and offered to lease land to any group that organized itself based on his principles of equality and common property. In this document, Owen addressed the ten social colonies that signed leases, reminding them of the conditions of their contracts. Ultimately, much of the land ended up in the hands of speculators seeking individual gain.
