Stanfield Family Photo Album

Description: Pages from one of the Stanfield Family photo albums. The photograph on the upper left shows a woman with her arm around a young girl. The image is labeled Louise and Aunty Jettey. The photographs on the lower left and upper right are both of Elinor, a young girl who is holding a doll in one image and looking at a paper in the other. The photograph in the lower right is labeled Over in the Arsenal and shows a woman and three girls dressed in winter coats and hats standing outside with two dogs. One of the girls has her hands in a fur muff. The Stanfield collection offers a rare glimpse into the lives of an upper-middle-class family living in Indianapoliss Woodruff Place. With the invention of the lightweight and inexpensive Kodak camera in 1888, the means to create photographs was placed in the hands of ordinary people, and they began to document their lives and stories.
