Rowland Allen left Harvard University in 1917 to serve in France as an ambulance driver. This photograph, taken by Allen, captures a World War I combat scene near Verdun in France. This scene shows soldiers standing near a large mounted weapon partially camouflaged by netting. The trench area around the artillery includes rolls of wire and several wheelbarrows heaped in a pile.
