Description: |
The bald eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows became a symbol of the United States when it was adopted as the great seal at the Constitutional Convention. The eagle represents longevity and strength, and the olive branch and arrows represent the power of war and peace. Posted at the beginning of the Civil War, this broadside urged young men to volunteer for military service. A banner below the eagle reads The Union Forever! The text of the broadside reads: Wanted--25 Men to fill the ranks of the Indiana Snake Killers, in Colonel Scribners Regiment at Camp Noble, New Albany. Enquire of John Sexton, Captain; John Curry, 1st Lieutenant; G. W. Windell, 2d Lieut. Exhibited as part of Treasures from the Collections - Celebrating 175 Years: 1830-2005. First rotation. |
