Uldine Utley Campaign Opening Service, Cadle Tabernacle, 1926

Description: Group portrait of Uldine Utley with a crowd assembled to see the 14-year-old evangelist speak, taken on Alabama Street in front of the Cadle Tabernacle in 1926. Numbered among them are Harry Raymond Pierson, his wife Letha, and daughters Ava Ann and Naomi LeClair. Uldine Mabelle Utley (1912-1995), an Oklahoma native living in California, started preaching when she was 11 after being recruited by Aimee Semple Mcpherson, who was known for training girl evangelists who then made a living traveling and spreading the gospel. A drama-club enthusiast with dreams of acting before her career as an evangelist preacher, Utley was often compared to Joan of Arc by her followers. She drew large crowds, even preaching at Carnegie Hall. Built in 1921, Cadle Tabernacle was located on the northwest corner of Ohio and New Jersey and had a seating capacity of 10,000.
