Description: |
During the 1908 presidential election the Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan was in town to officially notify Indianapolis native, John W. Kern of his selection as the vice-presidential candidate. On August 25, a parade of thirty automobiles took the notification party from the Denison Hotel to the State Fairgrounds. In this view Bryan and Kern are seen riding in the back seat of the automobile on the right. Seated between them is Thomas R. Marshall who was also campaigning for Indiana governor that year. Bryan and Kern did not win their election but Marshall was elected governor of Indiana. He served as governor from 1909 to 1913 and later became vice-president under Woodrow Wilson. The negative storage wrapper said only Bryan-Kern, country club. In this view the candidates are riding at the head of a caravan of automobiles. They may have left the Fairgrounds and are at the country club. The country club could have been the Indianapolis Country Club, located at the south west corner of 38th Street and Northwestern Avenue. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. The Interpositives are stored in PAN number order. |
