Herbert M. Woollen Home in the Golden Hill Neighborhood of Indianapolis

Description: Dr. Herbert M. and Irma (Wocher) Woollen built their home in Golden Hill at 3657 Spring Hollow Road in late 1930. Mrs. Woollen, a well-known amateur singer, had the home designed in the style of an Italian palazzo. Previous to that, the couple lived at 1719 North Pennsylvania Avenue. According to the 1931 city directory Dr. Woollen was the Vice President of the American Central Life Insurance Company. Census records for 1930 confirm the couple at the previous address on Pennsylvania. Dr. Woollen was 42 years old and Mrs. Woollen was 34. Dr. Woollen was a man of many interests. A graduate of the Indiana Medical School, he practiced medicine as well as lecturing at the school. He retained his position as president of American Central Life Insurance Company when it became American United Life. During his tenure there the company built the building at Fall Creek and Meridian Streets. He also served for many years on the board of the Indiana State Symphony Society, an organization that helped found the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
