In 1906 the new military installation near Indianapolis was officially named Fort Benjamin Harrison, after the former U.S. President from Indiana. During World War I, it became one of the key mobilization and training sites in the country, hosting three officer training camps, medical training camps, and engineering specialists. In June of 1917, as many as 12,000 men resided at the fort, with thousands of others passing through during the war |
