Airplane Race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Description: Fisher was convinced that people would pay to see anything that was new and different, so he organized an Aviation Week at the Speedway beginning on June 13, 1910, with Wilbur and Orville Wright as a featured attraction. The planes flying in this photograph were probably photographed at the event and then added by the photographer to the image of the Speedway. The photo shows the tracks steeply banked first turn and team garages.
The events shown here may represent the three days of airplane races that were held in June 1910. Wilbur and Orville Wright participated in the opening events on Monday, June 13. The final attraction on Wednesday was a race between a car and an airplane flying overhead. The plane won by four seconds. The planes flying overhead in this photograph were probably images taken at the events and added to this image by the photographer. The camera on the outside of the first turn shows the steeply banked track, team garages in the first turn, and an Aerodrome in the distance.
