National Balloon Race at the Speedway, June 5, 1909

A balloon race was held in June of 1909 to generate revenue and interest in the automobile races at the Speedway. Seen here are some of the 3,500 paying customers. Outside the track there was a huge traffic jam and 40,000 spectators who watched for free. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The nitrate negative was damaged and part of the image is lost. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. |
