Letter from Elijah W. Israel to his Wife Frances

Description: Israel finds the area they are in beautiful, but the local inhabitants have been left nearly destitute by the war. Many local men hid in caves while Rebels came through and carried off their property. He says that Rebels have not treated people of East Tennessee very well. His company is heading for Chattanooga where they expect a battle.
Elijah Witney Israel (1839–1863) was born in Johnson County, Indiana. He later moved to Rensselaer, Jasper County, where he farmed for a living. In August 1862, he enlisted in Company A of the 87th Indiana Regiment. In June 1863, he was promoted to the rank of first sergeant and was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga on 19 September 1863.
