Born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised and educated in France, McDowell graduated from West Point in 1838. He began his Civil War assignments as a brigadier general and was promoted to major general by 1862. A court of inquiry cleared McDowell of wrong doing for his part in the disaster at the Second Bull Run, and he continued to serve with the military until the late 1870s. He died in San Francisco after working in civic planning, and the city parks department. 0000.0542 |
