James H. Henderson Letter, MacDougall Hospital

Description: Camped Near Savannah GA December the 25th 1864Dear sister it is with pleasure that I seat myself this Sabbath? Morning to inform you that I am well at the present and I hope when these few lines come to hand they may find you and your little family enjoying? the same great blessing. I haven’t received no answer from the last letter that I written but I don’t know whether you got it or not. I that I would write and tell you where we was. We are camped (#?) miles and a half of town. Savannah is the nicest down that I have been in in the south. The (B??) left the night of the 15? They left mainly? all of their artillery and ammunition. I was in town yesterday and I saw several good looking girls. There the streets was full of (??) the 15 (??) was on review?. The 66 Ind was there I saw all the boys. The boats come up to the town. They is a large river here. We can see over into South Carolina. Well , Mary, this is Christmas today. I would love to see you the best kind and little Jimmy if I was at home. I would get some of the girls Christmas gifts sure?. Well, I guess they has been several weddings lately. I would have to been there(?). But, I wish them great long luck and a happy life. I am in hope they will all get married before I get back if I should live to get back. If I should live to get back I think the war will end before a great while if we (??) whip them like we have been for the last few months. We whip them everywhere we have been this summer. We have been all over Georgia. We have had plenty to eat. Sweet potatoes and pork and everything that we wanted. Well, Mary, I have just eat my Christmas dinner. I had beans and rice? and pancakes and beef and sugar and coffee. (??) my dinner and a miger? To wait on (?) I am messing? With the Lieutenant. We have got up a nice little house to live in and it has been tolerable cold here for the last few nights. But, it is warm and pleasant today. Health is good in camp. Leander is well and hearty. Well, I hain’t got a letter from Chambers for a long time. I had got but 2 letters since we left Atlanta. I guess they have all forgotten me. Well, I have written all the news that would be interesting to you so I will bring my few lines to a close. Give my love and best respects to all the girls. So, good bye for this time. Write soon.
