Description: |
Hern notes that they were building defense works the night before and sleeping with their guns. The 12th Indiana arrived at their camp and the 99th Regiment from Indiana would soon be there. He has received news from Vicksburg. Harlow J. Hern (ca. 1839–1920s) was born in Indiana and resided in Lexington, Scott County, Indiana, when he enlisted as a corporal in Company C. of the 100th Indiana Regiment in August, 1862. He was mustered out in June 1865 and later moved to Greenfield in Lagrange County, Indiana, where he was residing in 1920 with his wife Mary. The collection contains three letters written by Hern while serving with the 100th Indiana to his wife, “Mat” (Mary), 1863; 1865. Letters were written from Collierville and Grand Junction, Tennessee, 1863, and from Camp Parrett, 20 April 1865. The letters mainly describe camp activities, loneliness, and in the one dated the Saturday the 23rd he writes of his views of death and the idea of deserting. |
